Albere might still have a point.

Are you saying, Ben, that when you walk out on the branch and grip the top of the VT, and pull gently down so that the rope is allowed to pass through the hitch - that's when you find that the rope isn't being allowed through freely enough?

This still might be because the VT still has too much grip on the rope. Have you tried tying the VT with fewer wraps and more braids?

Ah I understand what your saying, what i do is grab my hitch,then above the hitch feed some line out to allow me enough slack but it's a 2 handed job. That's the only way I no

Ah so we have the answer.... 2 handed. Darn, the downside to the HC/VT. Everyone, try the version I use... Now, what about the singing tree rope wrench............

If the VT is tied and dressed correctly, then pulling on the hitch will allow you to advance out towards the tips of the branch.

 

The problem I sometimes have is wanting to have a bit of slack in the system so you pull the rope on the hitch to gain slack. Only to have the weight of the rope pull the slack out of the line again.

I don't think it's the answer - two hands I mean.

As I walk out on a branch, I lean away from the stem and as I touch the top of the VT it loosens and my bodyweight pulls slack through the hitch. I only need one hand on the hitch.

As I've said, the grip/release characteristics of your VT can be altered with different combinations of wraps and braids.

Give it a try ....... before you move over to the rope wrench.

lol dunno if this is just me, but you defo dont use two hands to walk out on a limb that is just scary. i think the best thing would be to watch a tree climbing video and watch how guys walk out on a limb. it all comes down to the Hitch, this is what is causing your problem mate.
