Priced a job to remove a dead larix decidua the tree was full of small holes the lady said it was from a woodpecker it looked like it had been used for firing practice. would this be the woodpecker looking for grubs of a beetle ?.Will add pic later

Take care if you are climbing this one as all the trees i have taken down with lots of woodpecker holes have been really rotten all the way through its like they know its rotten and decayed and that's where all the insects are . Just my two pence worth dont know this is all ways the case.:001_smile:

Andrew,

:thumbup1: or other insect larvae. Woodpeckers only create one or two holes for nesting (see : the arborists little helper).

I have taken an ash out recently that had four w pecker holes in it and they looked to all be in use 70% of said tree was to rotten for firewood ,i allso know of another ash [coverd in fungus] that has 3 or more w pecker holes in next time im over that way ill get some pics.:001_smile:

Inspected a lime in a park in scarborough a couple of years ago and the entire tree was covered in lines of shallow holes. Spoke to a local ornithologist about it who was very exited! now the local twitchers monitor the tree - apparently its a woodpecker behaviour seldom found in the uk, although it is documented in US and in mainland europe by some woodpecker species.
