Feel free to laugh but my first thought was an alder with the dark colouring and the fact that it's in wet ground isn't it?

Beyond 'alder'... that's down to those who know what they're on about.

Funnily enough, I was thinking along the lines of the cut leaf alder. Alnus glutinosa 'imperialis' perhaps?...

It may well have been beside a pond in the botanical garden. I think I will have to tell you what it is. I thought it was guessable but I would do as I knew the answer and saw (and heard) the whole tree.

A tricky single leaf ident... from Arduaine again.

 

This one i shall admit, i do not know but have one in my images from a site in watford.

 

I am intrigued to know as its puzzled me for months and months!
