Fourtrak or 90 or other?

Looking at replacing the Mitzy pinin which is rusting to bits and looks way shabby and getting rid of the old smiley transit which isn't used often and is surely going to give in soon!

I've ordered a 3.5 ton trailer, which will take the place of the transit and we've the 2.2 ton chipper to tow occasionally (we've the 130 and iveco that can tow them), the main use will be quoting and commuting. So small size is important, but it needs to look right pulling up at jobs..

The only smallish vehicles I've found are the fourtrak and the defender 90.

What could you choose?

You could get a lowish milage tidy late fourtrack for around £3K mark

similar age and condition 90 defenders (300tdi/Td5) are more like £6-8K.

A similar age disco2 would be between for £5-6K, which is crazy as new it cost more then the defender but it's a bit big.

I'm drawn to the 90 but apart from the green oval why would I buy a defender. What else should I consider?

Ben,

I have had both, and you know I am biased towards to green oval however!

I'd find as later and tidy fourtrak as you can, then I'd get it serviced and get the think bathed in waxoil or another chasis/body treatment.

both vehicles will tow the 3500kg trailer legally if needed but the fourtrak will be that bit more car like when you are nipping round quoting etc. they are a very capable off roader but not as good as the 90.

don't expect the 90 to be as comfortable on the road as the 130 the shorter wheelbase finds every hump, lump, bump in the road and the ride comfort won't be as good as the longer wheel base vehicles.

So there you go a Landy man telling you to by a fourtrak!

I have had landrover for about 17 years, I haven't got one now. I do love them but they are a pain, a bit of a love hate relationship! I would like a fourtrak but I can't justify another toy. The only thing that puts me of them is the 2.8 lump or should I say the fuel consumption!

I love my Fourtraks, Am on my 3rd one, (6th in the family!)

They are prone to rot, Sills and rear arches.

Lift the boot carpet and have a look at the floor and arches.

Also the chassis is prone to rot on the Indys, check the crossmember where the rear axle top mounts go, these break away from the chassis rails, and are repaired by crow poo welding and bits of tube hammered into them......
