Outdoor Wood Boiler - do these feature here (UK) much / yet?

At the stove trade show last June there was a guy was a guy from the US selling what looked like a small log cabin. It is a large burn box, maybe 1 cubic meter surrounded on 3 sides with a water jacket. Very highly insulated, feeding the property with insualted underground pipes.

 

You would refill it by the barrow full.

Problem with a large water jacket is that it reduces the temp in the fire box too much. so effective combustion is not possible and all that unburnt fuel goes up the chimney....

Might I add that really really really one needs sommat approaching the Germanic integrated approach, the boiler & thermal store located in a basement below the house so as to (i) give a longer flue & (ii) utilize any "waste" heat escaping from the boiler & associated plumbing, plus one can then tip the firewood down through a hatch.

Plus (iii) tend the boiler without leaving the house

I am currently attempting to build a reasonably insulated "room" round my boiler that is located under a shed roof outside.

Partly to prevent heat loss, partly to attempt to get my wood drier & warmer before putting it in the boiler.

Insulation has got bloody expensive btw.

Have a look on ebay for seconds etc. Or join your local freecycle. There's usually somebody giving away a few sheets or bats every now and again.

Wood gasification is indeed the way forward. I recommend having a look through the green building forum. Loads of ideas and advice.

 

I have just had a VIGAS 100 kw log boiler installed. This is designed to burn at full load and charge 2 x 5000l Akvatherm Heatstores.

 

We havent got the whole hopuse connected yet, but what is impressive is the tiny amount of heat leakage. Our set up is situated out side in the "lean-to" Everything is superinsulated.

 

When we heat the tanks upto around 85 degrees the system loses less than .5 degrees per day.

 

Im looking forward to a winter free from fuel oil bills !!

Eco Angus are very good I've had one for two years only advice go for more kw than you

Think you need. You need to burn every day in the winter and every 3 to 4 in summer
