I get asked to make these from old hammer heads. I charge £35 and make them to customer specs. Mine are similar to the ones Ben Orford does.

Just to add to that ....I have used one for years made from an old hammer head with a wood planing blade in front...its kind of a hybrid between both, the blade is super sharp and crisp cutting and the weight from the partial hammer head gives excellent balance and drive. The commercial equal would cost a lot in a shop, this type of adze is good to use....very good.

They look really nice, do they keep a good edge?

I'd be interested in having some BIG carving chisels made when I've got some spare cash, is this something you'd be up for? Was thinking maybe leaf springs would be good for them, but I'll be swayed by your expertise.

Cheers,

Si

They seem to hold a good edge, though I'm careful when heat treating as quite a bit of work goes into getting the shape to have one crack in the final stages...well, you can imagine!

Yes, I do a few socket chisels from spring and they're very useable tools. Let me know what you're after.

Nice, is that a slick?

Looking at probably 2" in straight and a couple of gouges. May even go bigger if pos.

If I was going to buy off the shelf I'd get these

Sculpture Tools

Can't buy at present but if you think it's do-able pm some prices and I'll start building up a fund for them.

Cheers, Si

PS love the axe in your avatar.
