I split a load of Poplar today - cleaves far better than anything I've ever split, including ash! Looking forward to seeing how it seasons - it's fairly light and I imagine that it will burn quickly once dry.

when splitting it, try and rip the bark off at the same time. its the bark that holds the moist in and prevents seasoning t oquickly. I split 20t in the spring, the odd few bits that still have the thick bark on are still moist under the bark!!

As above. I decided to stick some in the wood pile after reading that it actually made half decent firewood. Makes fantastic kindling, splits easy, dries quick and is great just to get that bit of heat in the fire ready for some really good stuff. I'd have no qualms about putting a bit more in the pile for next year.

so is there anybody who uses it for kindling on a commercial scale? how does it split when seasoned, is it still easy or does it tend to fracture and run out a lot more? reason i ask is that i would be afraid of it mouldering if kindled and stacked unseasoned as i'm not sure enough air would get through, particularly if in plastic bags. although saying that i've seen green wood kindling moulder even in monofilament bags!

 

I'd be thinking to prepare for kindling machine whilst green, then let season before kindling and packaging...

Things have moved on since my last post and I have circa 150 medium sized Polpars which need felling and extracting. Does any know of a contractor probably one who supplies woodchip or kindling who might be interested in taking them away for free.

They're owned by a woodland community group who can't afford to pay for the work. The access is reasonably good and they're located near Leicester.
