smelling of aniseed and staining pale yellow?

This ^^^^

Yellow stainers are too easy to confuse with field mushrooms.

I don't touch them for that reason - just not worth the risk IMHO

The yellow in one of the pics would definitely be enough for me to avoid them.

If there is any doubt in your mind at all, do not eat. I would not trust the judgement of another out there in internetworld with my own life, as seen before there are just too many "experts" whose knowledge may be flawed.

... smell with a hint of rubber ... rubbing the rim and the stem turned yellow.

Paul,

The combination of turning yellow when cut or rubbed and the smell of hospital disinfectants (phenol) is species specific for Agaricus xanthoderma, a poisonous champignon !!! And I only answer your ID-call to warn anyone picking field mushrooms never to eat fungi "identified" by photo (and description) through the internet !!!

Good advice, but to be fair, no one suggested they would be OK to eat. I used to try to use a minimum of 3 books (including Philips) to ID anything I was considering eating.

Now I just stick to Cauliflower Fungus, Chanterelles, and the odd Amethyst Deceiver, as I'm usually confident in my own ID skillz with these.
