If the battery isn't charging then the autosweep probably doesn't work as it relies on the feed from the stator (which is the main bit of the charging circuit) to work out the engine speed etc.

 

If the belts are slack and the auto sweep isn't working(and your used to using the AS) then it will grind really badly.

 

Did you check the compressions of the cylinders and check the condition of the spark plugs?

 

Thanks the belts have been replaced and are tight. I haven't disconnected the auto sweep but you have made a great point about the charge. It def ain't charging. How do I check that??

have you tried checking the "govenor" on the carb? It should allow the engine to reach max revs under no load but dump more fuel in when under load. If you watch the side of the carb (if visible) while someone else operates the machine, when loaded you ought to see it move, if it is stuck try some WD40 or similar.

Sounds good but is the load sensor not involved in the control box which by the sounds of it is not getting a feed ?

is the electric clutch on its way out ??

 

If the clutch was on its way out then I would have thought that it would slip under load and not have enough purchase to stall the engine

Its not belts if the cutter head stalls, the belts would slip first.

Power im thinking the throttle lever has slipped or slips and allows the revs to drop. does the throtle cam hit the stop when you throttle up ?

if you look through the manual I posted it has a section on how to test the output from the stator.

 

The control basically has a pos and neg feed, a single feed from the stator then a double feed out to the AS solenoid.

Don't start me off on teeth. I have the Vermeer yellow jacket teeth and round them off as quick as you like. The soil type round us is heavy clay with lots of flint. Anyone else have these problems. My friends say finger teeth are better for these soil types.

Took it out today with fresh teeth on it. Definitely better but still dying if you move it too fast. I recon the auto sweep ain't working at all so need to go and check the feed from the stator. Where is this?
