Another vehicle liscensing question.

Evening all,

 

Ive been considering doing my trailer liscense sometime this year as you seem to hneed it to function in this industry plus it its investing in myself blah blah.

 

Ive been thinking and talking to different people and it seems to make sense just to go big and get an arctic liscense. However someone I spoke to said that to tow a tranny and chipper you still need a B+E liscense?

 

So my question is what test or liscense will cover what? will a 7.5 tonner plus trailer cover a 3.5 plus trailer or do I have to go all out and get an arctic (C+e i belive).

 

So anyhelp of making sense the DVLA's mind

If you take a bigger category it covers you for smaller vehicles. I.E Category C (rigid)will cover you for C1(7.5t) C+E Will cover you for everything lorry wise and car/van wise as they automatically give you B+E and C1+E with it

You need +E in one form or another to tow anything over 750kg. If you do C+E (old class 1) then you do not need to do B+E but if you just do C (old class 2) that does not entitle you to tow your big chipper or trailer with anything.

 

Also B+E then C does not mean you can tow a big trailer with a class 2 truck (>7.5 tonne). I don't think you need an extra test to drive up to 7.5 tonne +750kg trailer even on a post '97 license, but I could be wrong with the last bit

Is there a C1 test for post '97 license or is entitlement granted when car test is passed?

If you do your artic (c+e) then you can drive and tow any size vehicle and trailer combo, as long as both veh + trl are of the correct legal combination,ie, the correct gvw and gtw (gross train weight). However it does seem a bit extreme and expensive (£3k +) . The B+E (trailer) will allow you to pull a 3.5t gross trailer.

you will need to do either your 7.5tonner or big rigid before full artic or rigid/7.5t + trailer i believe, i went for biggest i could do at 21 with post 97 licence and that was rigid 33?T

Thanks for all replies it's much appreciated. My age does play a factor but the website says if you do pre theory test thing you can do bigger vehicles at a younger age. Anyway from your replies seems like going for a 7.5 ton plus trailer and see how we go

You'll find quite a few places do th e7.5 tonne training in Iveco turbo dailies which aren't much bigger than a transit so it shouldn't take too much gettign used to

just wait untill you're 21 like i did (only waited a few months mind) and for the same price as 7.5, get full rigid, be more use to companys that have hiab wagons then, aswell as 7.5'ers

What he said, the 7,5 tonner course and test are the same as the full rigid (28t?). For now just get your B+E, if you're a good confident driver you can just take the test or get a few hours training to do the "monkey tricks" the examiners are trained to look for (like looking in your mirrors as if they have nipples , indicating the full 300yards before turning etc.) and you'll pass for £250.
