My thoughts from looking at the pics and if the tree appears dramatically different from just a month ago I would….Remove all limbs and reduce the trunk to approx 15-20ft. Next just wait and see how the epicormic growth reacts. This was done at Westonbirt Arboretum with good success rates. If the tree does not recover at least it is safer and could be left as a monolith at a more suitable height.

yew is probably the last tree in the book to have safety come as an issue dead or alive:lol:

Don't wright it of just yet Tom, Yew are as tough as old boots, it may well come back from the brink mate.

 

Well this is what i was thinking. YOu can hammer these things hard and they just come back for more!! I did think about knocking it down in size in the winter- take the dead off, and let it concentrate on the new growth it's already putting out and see what happens in the spring. At the same time though, I wonder if the extra stress would just finish it- but then again, little to lose by the looks of it.
