looking to get started in carving,

just a few quick questions

 

what basic tools do i need, obviously saws :blushing:

 

but what else

 

also i've got a few smaller saws, stihl 017's, macullochs etc, what bar n chain do i need, and wheres the best place to get them.

 

bigger saws arn't a problem

017/MS170/MS171 is ideal to start, the standard bar is good enough to begin with as it tapers slightly, once you've done a few carvings if you then feel you want a carving bar thens the time to get it.

 

You could buy a carving bar, chain and sprocket for a MS170 now but you wouldn't see too much change from £100, a bit expensive if you decide it's not for you!

 

Personally I don't use a carving bar, feel free to take a look at my website all the carvings in the gallery were done with a standard MS171 w/14" bar. Not the best I know, but shows what can be done!

 

Other tools - angle grinder with sanding dics, powerfile, blowtorch, danish oil, as many other woodworking tools as you want!

You'll be getting an alaskan mill next to do a few benches.

 

lol its good to have hobbies :biggrin: and if it can be sort of combined with work or arisings from work, then why not :)
