i visited my mum today near winchester,hampshire and saw 2 what looked like light brown woodpeckers, no other markings, just looked like woodpeckers, cant seem to find any pics on the net, any ideas??

They sound like young yaffles (Green woodpeckers). They're a kind of speckled brown when they fledge. I saw some myself last week and had to take a closer look to see what they were :biggrin:

these are just soild brown, no markings at all,reckon they are woodpeckers tho, will have to see if they change colour

Mistle thrush can sometimes look a bit woodpeckerish if you squint. Often mess around on the ground. They are more noticeable at this time of year, often hanging around in groups. I see loads of them on the lawns on a morning.

 

Mistle thrushes pictures don't really do them justice for some reason, in how little they look like their pictures, if yergetme.

Or perhaps you spotted something really rare and not usually seen in this country that will get the twitchers overly excited?

I tried to find a mistlethrush pic that looked like a woodpecker and completely failed, despite every time I see a mistlethrush I automatically have woodpecker flying into my head. Glad someone managed to find contrasting pictures!! :001_smile:
