People use trees as targets for fighting dogs. We had a spate of tree damage like this on a few sites. Lots of claw and teeth marks in the bark. If it was done by kids the cuts would be much neater and the bark on the top of the scar wouldn't have the "torn off" look.

Bored kids + status dogs + lack of intelligence = the kind of damage you see there. You often get the little darlings using their knives to bebark the tree as well.
