Gerrit, I would think that the bleeding on that Beech with the Ganoderma pfeifferi brackets would be associated with Armillaria sp

, its a rare birch that goes on to live the live that a staverton birch does! and even they had mellea bleeds, in case you did not notice!

 

Tony, I don't miss much (especially when there is a photo op), so no it didn't go un-noticed at Staverton

 

the type of bleeding associated with Armillaria sp & birch is something often seen in woodland.

 

Though no signs of either bleeding or fruiting or rhizomorphs on the birch with the lucidums (yet)

Too many people & dogs around it for it to be a candidate.

 

Its already in serious decline, canopy getting sparser on each passing year.

Quite suprised there appears to be no Meripilus involved.

Joking aside, why did you excise (I guess this is what you mean) and cauterize the patch? Was there a bleed, if so caused by what?

Gotta love the attempt, I mean how big was this wound guy? and did it extend from the point of entry to the point of final reach?

 

Q. rubra is particularly prone to honey, and doesnt cope well with pruning wounds.

 

How much die back was present in the canopy?
