Tree assessment/forest pathology

Recommended Posts

lol good one, fungi may panic because competition has shown up.

meripilus I would have thought is a nightmare on Sycamore, found it myself on a fell we did last year also with K. deusta and Polyporus squamosus the tree was nailed

aha, competition makes sense  what are your thoughts on merip fruiting from live roots/ dead stump/ laurel in these images?

yep, and I remember days gone by when Gerritt said it must be growing from still live roots of beech which had been ground out years before...

I think Meripilus is a perfectly capable saprotroph but lets not forget it is also a very capable wood degrading fungi with a toolbox to die for, including Pectinase for degrading the middle lammela and also soft rot as well as white rot capacities. Pectinase is the one to be afraid of, Pectin the super adhesive is the bond between cells/vessels

very interesting

I will dig out the full details of Meripilus today and add or maybe even start a new thread on capacities and modes of decay. I would have been at Kew today but ive had either the heaviest cold or flu all week and its still making me cough and sneaze so I cant really sit in the Jodrell lecture theatre infecting everyone else, gutted.

Be the first BMS open ive missed in over five:thumbdown:

That would be good, a fungal fix as I missed it too  Really peeved as I was all ready and looking forward to it, but the the wife had, um, issues! Not happy, as those issues made me miss my place to see Mynors at Barcham recently. Grrrr

Always next year...
