Metasequoia glyptostroboides (dawn redwood) in garden

Sorry this is my first post, but I was recommended to ask this question in this forum.

 

We have just had about £2000 worth of trees planted in our garden by a professional tree nursery.

 

One of these is a dawn redwood.

 

When we picked this out at the nursery we didn't even know the name, just liked the look of it.

 

It's now been planted about 1m from the border of our garden and 2m from the end wall of our neighbour, (about 15m from ours).

 

Having read up about this tree we now realise it is both far too big for our garden and far too close to the border and our neighbour.

 

Have we got any leverage over the original supplier to at least move this tree away from the boundary, (it's already about 5m tall), or preferably take it it back?

 

It was only planted 6 weeks ago and we had originally spoken to them about moving it 1 week after planting, but now they are not accepting or returning our calls or emails.

If you selected the species and the planting site, then no.

 

If they advised you to plant it there, then maybe.

 

Just out of interest, were they container grown trees or bareroot?

They are lovely trees, enjoy it for as many years as you can and then get one of us lot in to remove it, thats what we are here for.

Well, when we bought first saw it, the nursery owner was with us, and he had previously seen our garden having helped us choose and position 5 trees already.

 

He was also supposed to have been there for the planting of it, but he didn't turn up, just his 2 workers.

 

So it's OK being 2m from a house wall?

like others suggest enjoy it and then remove it, im sure the site will require thinning out after extensive growth of those planted

 

it is a lovely tree, but as you think, too close, and a shame the nursery did not advise on this, if they had you would have not let it be put there im sure.

oh, 2m from a house wall? I thought you meant boundary wall.

 

If you happen to be on clay soil then I would remove it a bit sharpish, but if the soil is well drained with no clay (pretty much anything other than clay is good) then you could keep it for a while.

 

If it has just been planted then it would be quite easy to pull up now and move or sell on e bay maybe? Buyer collects and bring a shovel.

I would have thought that any reputable professional would help you remedy the situation as a goodwill gesture, esp given the money you have spent with them.
