I think Cobra isn't the be all and end all that you think. I have installed a couple in the last 5 years. The ones that I have helped with appear to be breaking down. Ok drilling into a tree isn't good for it, but steel cable doesn't breakdown.

I'm a fan of cobra in principal (never installed it myself) but I've been to a job where cobra had been installed about 12 years earlier according to the customer and was both very loose and the materials appeared to be quite badly degraded on close inspection. I suppose this is both a maintainance and training of installers issue.

Cobra reckon that the materials degrade in strength by about 2% a year, and that they should last a minimum of 12 years. I have installed 3 cobra braces in the past one of which was about 8 years ago. Will try to get out to it and have a look-see, and get a photo. Would be interested to see how its held up. Might be a while though as its about 200 miles away. I installed another one 3 years ago a bit closer that may be worth a look aswell.
