At the end of the day Dean its the small jobs where the vat makes a difference and you can always take cash.:001_tongue: for those. Of course I never do that.

My customers always seem a bit shocked when they ask how much for cash and I say a few quid more.

Because it costs me to pay cash into the bank, I tell them.

My mate once came unstuck when he did some building work for a tax inspector, you never know who you are working for.

Customers should be getting extra benefit from paying Vat as a none vat company is not a company. The threshold is so low that anyone not charging VAT must be dodgy!!

I know we all started out not charging vat and we were not dodgy but generally thats a good argument to make to your customers.

sorry rupe i find that a little unfair.

i'm not registered for vat and i try to give a proffesional sevice as best i can. my customers are my bread and butter and without them i am nothing.

for that reason alone i respect all my customers (even the awkward ones) and will often cater for their needs in cojunction with my products and services.

i dont think being vat registered should be seen as a standard as to the quality of your business.

as for a refund steve i think it can take upto 6 months depending on how much you have to pay the next quarter

All right, fair point I apologise. Didn't mean to generalise but i guess that is how it sounded. I just think though if someone is running a normal tree bussiness they would be vat registered. For those who aren't good on you if you can stay that way then fair enough, I don't like the hassle of it.

Steve lets discuss this in two years time, we'll see how you feel about VAT then!

i find i can get better tax relief off machinery on the end of year accounts than i could if i got the vat back on every thing else and had the hassle of accounts every 3 months and the cash movements of whats mine and whats the governments.

also my customers wouldn't like it, the gov would waste it and the dolies would drink and smoke it.

far better i have it.

For customers who I think won't like it, or for older types who may like things to be simple, I just quote including vat. If I'm more expensive then fine but they just get a quote and don't realise some of it is vat. The invoice will then have a lesser amount plus vat equalling the quote so no worries.

In shops everything just has a price but we all know vat is there and we never question it. Tree work doesn't have to be any different.
