Now upto 740 acre of heathland alight. so it has destroyed Upton Heath it is now aiming for Creekmoor Heath and plantation. I wouldn't be surprized if it goes past 1000 acres in the next hour or two but now upto 200 fire fighters. Dorset only has 225 (most of which are retained). The wind is basically acting like a massive bellow. The last big fire we had was Canford Heath and that incinerated 100 hectares of heath in 4 hours. That was in 2006 on a heath only 1/2 mile or so from the main seat of the fire. Here are links of Canford Heath blaze in 2006:

Where did you get the 740 acre figure from?

I live in Broadstone, 2 minutes from where the fires were burning the other day.

We had to stop work because not only could we not see anything due to the smoke(!!), but the police were evacuating the area.

I've never seen so many fires crews, unimogs and landys!

One of my colleagues lives in Broadstone as well. He has a small green Fiat.

I think the bbc got their figures wrong and i just posted the figures they put up. At the time i posted it it was more like 740sqm rather than 740 acres.

I think the Beeb and most of the other media got the figures very wrong indeed! When I drove past the fire on Thursday the Beeb and local radio were reporting the "over 1000 acres" were burning. On the BBC TV local late news tonight they are now saying that the fire burned 200 acres. When you look at the burned area 200 acres seems realistic. So much for accurate reporting!

Sadly there is no word yet that they have caught the deranged scrotes who started it.

I imagine that todays prolonged rain will have helped damp down the hotspots, but it won't have helped the good people out trying to rescue the wildlife.

It really has been a monumentally wet and grotty day today, seriously unpleasant. I spent the day manning a stand at the show at Kingston Maurward College at Dorchester, and most of the stallholders had left before noon it was so wet. In recent years, visitors have complained it is too hot for the annual show, this year tractors were needed to get visistor cars out of the car park. Really sad after the efforts that the organisers put in.

If you try and put this into perspective its real hard to come to terms with.... imagine i gave you a shotgun and told you to blow away every living thing you saw for the rest of your life, would you be able to kill as many living things as these people have by setting that fire? i really do wonder what will happen if they ever catch them and will the punishment fit the crime?
