Your thoughts on this pop.

These Trees have TPO's the spec is to Fell one stem and thin the other three by 30%. The stem to be 'felled' is the one with the orange mark (where we took it down too).

It does not need much of a wind for this stem to give major concern to it's owner. Esspecially since another pop failed next door a couple of months ago (again included bark at it's base..see below).

Although the TO was happy for it to come down to ground level (which would look better), I felt that it would be better to leave some of the stem to prevent decay at the base of the remaining tree.

Forget reducing or thinning this stem, as the owner simply was not having it......Woulda got someone else to take it down.

Would you have taken it all the way to the ground????

Good point there, I wouldn't have thought (without reading up) that pop would not compartment off easily because they are long course grained, I would think if you had have taken it right down to the ground you may have been leaving an open wound for the old pathogens.

i would probably have done the same but a little lower so the owner can cut off the new groth himself.

I would have done similar, as the introduction of rot into the base/rootball of the tree would bring down a rapid demise, the consequences of which in such a cramped enviroment could be dire. I would recomend the monitoring of the stem also

I would have taken it to a bit above head height though, to allow easy managment of the re-growth and allow more light into the garden (which is usually an issue for most home owners).
