Hi guys I am new to the forum and am looking for some help and advice. I am currently serving in the RAF as an aircraft technician but after 9.5 yrs have had enough of the service life:thumbdown:. I am currently looking into courses to become a climber. I have no real experiene of tree work except splitting a few logs and pruning a few hedges etc. The main course I have looked in to so far is one that Kingswood training provide that is tailored to the service leaver. If anyone can help me out with some advice/information to steer me in the right direction then I would be most appreciative. Cheers :001_smile:

Practical quals ( NPTC etc ) are good nd furthermore essential as increasingly employers are reqired to usequalified staff. IMO, you will find it a bit limiting in years ahead.

RFS is a good qual for starters and includes NPTC units as a part of the certificate...check it out....

Cheers will have a look depends on wether my resettlement grant from the RAF will pay for it though as the course with Kingswood would be covered by the grant.

Heh mate use your resettlement grant for the 10 week tree surgery course at Merrist Wood College in surrey. You can live in and claim that cost back as well. While your organising that at HM's expense get in contact with local tree surgeons and get as much pre and post course experience as you possible can.

Showing your a grafter and reliable is much more valuable than qualifications BUT because of the forces you might as well get as many tickets as you can which is where the 10 week course comes in.

Just PLEASE don't think your a tree surgeon when you leave college ;)

A course with Mr Olley at Kingswood will set you in good stead! If you have never climbed before you will have to come back for your climbing assesments.

Your re-settelment grant, and ELC will pay for everthing you need.

You will obviously need further experience when you have finished.

Jeez, you have the skills of an aircraft technician and you want to go into treework?:scared1:

Seriously mate, this is a totally crap industry to be going into at the moment, I would stay in till the recession is over or go into the private aero industry.

Anything but treework!
