Just been handed a pair of geckos at work today and I think they have the european gaff on them. I was climbing on willow and they tore the bark to bits rather than just sticking in there. Which gaffs do you have/prefer? Would I have been better off with the american short? Is there just one size in the aluminium spikes? I know they are a little bit adjustable but I was told that they come in two sizes.

Mine have the shorter ones mate I've tried those longer ones and couldn't get away with them. I was marking the tree the same as you with them on but some people do prefer them that you have:)

If only it was that straight forward at our work. We have to go through 3 managers to get something like that cleared! You are right though. Mine are the european style then there are long and short american style.

Could I ask a favour?

Can you take a pic of the bottom attachment?

Mine looks different to yours, it has a Velcro fastening which is garbage, your one looks better!

As for the length of the gaffs they do look a bit long, I think there are 3 different types.

These spikes are gecko classics have velcro top strap and old style belt type ankle strap same as the ones I have. They were introduced as people did not like the velcro ankle strap.
