how much chain oil

have a new ms441 with 25" bar and plan to set oil at 1 tank per fuel fill. Is that right? or should it be more or less

shouldnt there be a little bit of chain oil left at the end of the tank. I dont think ive ever used a saw where its ran out completley. Or am I missing a point a bit here?

my previous jonsored 2165 used half a tank of oil per fueling but i always felt more oil was good. setting the ms441 to 90% soit cant run oil dry!

Generally the saw should use almost a tankfull or oil per tank of fuel - most I have used have been like that - not forgetting that a 13" bar will need the oil adjuster set to output less oil than a 24" bar as obviously the chain and bar needs much more oil due to its length.

 

Some saws seem to oil more than others - some I end up humming the theme tune to Dallas when I am using them as so much oil is coming out:laugh1: - Ask Luke from Old Warden about his MS660!!

i always set the oil pump so that there is a covering over the bottom of the tank when i fill up.

My experience is only with larger Stihls (044, 064, 066M, 076) being run for milling, so long bars - usually 36". As such I set them to max on the oil and this leaves a slight covering of oil in the tank. I think they're designed so that the fuel runs out before the oil on max as otherwise you could damage the bar and chain - run a shorter bar and you could be a bit more frugal with the oil.
