i do thank you for your input janey (as you seem to be the only one haha) and hope others get involved too:thumbup:

I think everone else has been drawn into a mycological black hole at the moment :sneaky2::lol:

I love the sound of your project and at the same time I really don't envy you with the amount of work it's going to take. I had completely forgotton about the basics in my list like the tree's name, genus, family etc. Doh! Sometimes it's so easy to overlook the most simple of things :blushing:. How about another wafer thin catagory for singifcance to arborists, eg, brittle wood like Paulonia or heavy resin exudation that'll mess up your ropes?

As for search options, I much prefer a series of drop down boxes where you can populate as few or many as you like. Depending on the drop downs, you could also use this function to generate a list of tree species for a particular situation when you're landscape designing.

with problem with drop downs would be if your not aux fait with tree characteristics, it can get too complicated, as in not piulling up ANY results, not that its not do-able though

there is an american site with a tree database that does a similar thing in regards to the land/treescaping by searching for trees with certain characteristics and it seems to work, might be a model thats worth following

i know this is going to be a journey but even if a few people use it long term it something to be proud of

think some of the acers with there 1000's of cultivars may be most taxing:blushing:

I've got a pic of a "drummonii" to start you off .

Are you sure this isn't just a cunning ploy to get funding to visit the world's arboreta taking pics in the name of, er, cough cough, research?

haven't even thought of funding:blush:

no as above this is something i want to do for myself and share with the world (for a small fee, £2.99 ok?) and if i per chance get to visit some remarkable places along the way then thats the sacrifice i shall have to make:biggrin:

and i'll think you'll find its a drummondii, or was that just a typo:001_tt2:

Guilty as charged your honour. I have been so engrossed with my latest fungi finds and discussing the outcomes I forgot the other threads. However since I went to a totally new site to survey it hit home that a tree ident facility on line would be a real asset. So I applaud your desire and without sounding like a fence-sitting thumb-twiddler I would be happy to add comment as it is being built and using it so you know where the quirks are or if something was missing. The lists of requirements already listed by Janey for example show the need (not by all I may add) for the overall database to hold.

Does that help at all? Really just wanted to show my support :thumbup1:

It's a veeeerrrry rare, little heard of cv.

Honest :blushing::lol:

I can't wait to return the the pedantics when we test drive your 'site .

How will you be sourcing the images? Will you be aiming to take a lot of the pics yourself? Have you approached any one like Barcham's, for eg, to get species info and cv info? Sorry for the twenty question style interrogation.

no no, the more questions asked the better it is as i can try to explain which also helps to get it organised in my head and on paper

I have already started taking the photos, have been for a while but its been mainly native species so far, to be honest hadn't really thought of big nursery's, got a few near me on the small scale that i may be able to ask for help but that is a good idea, especially for different less common cultivars

the interent is a huge help these days and although not always accurate it gives a good starting point on the detective trail sometimes, i very much doubt i'll get every photograph myself as i feel this would be an impossible task which would take to long so i have also started to draw up a list of potential 'experts' per say, that may be able to supply photo's needed (with recognition of course)

and i suppose this is where arbtalk comes in too, especially for the people that are interested, i think i remember steve planning something a while back for a directory similar to the fungi one but for trees, not sure if this ever came into fruition or if its still on the back burner somewhere but i have wanted to do one for a long time now, so i've made a start regardless:biggrin:

the most important bit for now before imaging is getting the layout and according information correct, allowing for ease of use but also be informative to the nTH degree

All comments are appreciated, consrtuctive and critical alike, it is the only way something gets improved, and the more people interested and willing to show support the more a worthwile project i think it is:thumbup:
