the short version is, when the little fella dropped out of the tree, he'd cut himself quite badly under the neck, tyne vet found maggots in there so cleaned up the wound and gave him penicillin, was ok for a couple of days then just didn't wake up..

 

shame as he was a plucky little bugger

Sorry to hear about your wee Tawny - had a similar thing happen myself a couple of weeks ago.

 

Pulled out of our track and onto the road at 6am and glimpsed a pair of yellow feet amongst some feathers in the verge. Thought, hold on that wasn't a dead pheasant. It was a mature tawny, the same one i'm sure as i've seen sitting on the fencepost above where I found it. SSPCA came and took it away - it had been hit by a car and really wasn't well. Had a good look through all the beech trees adjacent to the road for a nest but couldn't find one - i'm guessing the chicks didn't make it with only one parent feeding....
