Householder attempts felling conifer

We were called to a site the other day by a very worried householder who had attempted to fell a conifer in his garden.

We were greeted with a tree with probably about 20 cuts in the stem, a felling notch at about 10 feet even though the garden was more than big enough for a clear fell and two trapped bars. The guy was on a ladder trying to fell this with the string he was pulling it with about a foot above the face, obviously it kept sitting back on the saw.

The photos don't show that behind the fence was a conservatory which the neighbour had removed all their belongings from in anticipation. Fortunately a better placed rope and a good pull saw the tree down where it was intended.

Why do these people keep risking their safety and hefty repair bill by tackling trees far too big for their abilities?
