Chris is right. to the best of my understanding (some guesswork involved) the belarus 4x4s like that one use a shaft in the front axle and a drop box setup like a mog's portal boxes in theory, but as to whether they are chain driven or gear driven I wouldnt like to say

I think they are gear driven Jim.

 

The 2wd ones looked very similar on belarus but on this one you can see the larger hub with the gears in it.

 

Around the same time John Deere tried something that looked very similar but wasnt. They thought up a hydraulic driven 4wd system. They all broke and the tractors ended up being 2wd with a little extra front end weight as standard!
