Wild camping

Dartmoor is one of the few places in the UK where wild camping is very much accepted and enjoyed. Provided you choose your spot sensibly and don't pitch your tent on any of the following areas:

farmland

moorland enclosed by walls

within 100 metres of a road

flood plains

archaeological sites

 

The list of places that you could wild camp is extensive but there is a handy interactive map that gives lots of info to help you plan your resting place. The Ministry of Defence has a training area on northern Dartmoor which comprises Okehampton, Merrivale and Willsworthy ranges. The public has access to these moorland areas except when the ranges are in use for live firing. To check for firing times, please see Dartmoor Training Area

I was a bit disapointed the last time i went to Wisemans wood, It is starting to suffer from too many people and sheep. There is a much better wood on the south part of the moor just below Black tor; Black tor copse. It is about a 4 mile hike from the nearest road, but it has good atmosphere/ spooky when the mist is low. It has some of the best boulder/ moss/ tree/ lichen/ bryophyte combination on the planet.
