Have you heard of meningitis in dogs. I hadn't intill my 15 month old flatcoat got it.Starts with dog being very lethargic, tired and develpoes to stiff neck.We took her to the vets and she stayed in overnight on anti inflamatories and anti biotics, next day she was a bit better so we took her home.2 days later she took really ill so we took her to a better vet.She had x rays spinal taps etc ,but she had very difficult symptoms such as bloodshot eyes.2 days later they rang while she was under anasthetic to say they couldn't do another spinal tap as her brain pressure was too high. They said the only thing left was to try steroids and hope that it was meningitis. We went in to say our goodbyes and the little so and so came round the corner wagging her tail the difference was remarkable she is now well on the road to recovery but it just shows how easy thing happen

Yes i wish i had taken ot insurance and saved myself £1300

my dog had meningitis when he was a pup. Not all breeds get it. We spent £2000-£3000 on our dog under his insurance. He recovered and came off the steriods about 1 year later. In the nine years that have followed he has only had one possible relapse , but this was not as bad as the first incident. He has lived a happy a full life would not be without him.

Just going through this now with my 5yr old Collie, I'd never heard of it either.

Came on really quickly, first thought he'd strained his neck but Vet thought meningitis. Really thought we'd lost him at one stage, but he came round quite rapidly after a couple of days on antibiotics and steroids.

Wasn't aware it could reoccur, he seems fine now and only had 5 day course of tablets. Just as well I've got a tame Vet, the costs are frightening - a bit like paying for healthcare in the USA!
