The situation is that I've had an offer of larch slab wood from a fencing contractor that cuts his own rails etc. The deal includes a building with 3 phase to do it in and a good price on the slab wood (to be nailed down yet, but will depend on wood to bark ratio for starters).

Anyone out there do something similar already, any one tried and had poor results? Does kindling dry faster than logs or is it similar?

kindling will dry substantially faster than logs, given sufficient airflow, due to larger surface area available for moisture to escape from. insufficient airflow will result in mouldy sticks:001_smile:

I'm presuming that you guys bag it into nets and stack them to dry already bagged up?

You may have guessed by now, bar burning the stuff , kindling is all new to me

How about the larch bit? most kindling seems to be white wood of various types.

I have been told larch gives u terrible splinters that drive u mad but never tried it my self. The less bark you get in the bag the better the product looks slab wood will probably give you alot of bark.

i can vouch for the splinters from ripping on forrestor bandsaws...

After processing 27 ton of larch last year i agree with hullsmillfarm re splinters!

Larch tends to give off tiny splinters that annoy you like mad but you cant see them unless you look real close.........moral of the post is wear gloves

job to know which gloves to wear though, i was always taught that flesh tears easier then leather... i rather lose just one or two fingers, if it came to that, than have my whole hand dragged in because of a rigger glove...

my sister-in-law and myself use larch for kindling and logs in nets, she wears gloves , i dont and to be honest its not a problem, little bits on the fingers thats all, but if two girls can use larch , im sure you big boys will be ok

I've found larch to light tremendously easily - when I had a decent pile of dead standing larch, I used to light the full logs off newspaper.
