ve been milling as similar lump and i agree with big J. keep the chain very sharp. lots of vibration otherwise.

im air drying mine at the moment for floor boards in our extension. ive got one section to go and i was thinking of quarter sawing half of it? i want to use it for kitchen doors.

Just re measured it, 15ft 3" x 3ft3".

I would still keep it at full length if you can. If then you need to cut it down, you will be able to see where the defects are in it and work around that.

hi mate got 10ton of ash delivered a while ago, and decided to mill some of the bigger buts, definetly mill longer as its shaked like a b...ch,,,,but should still be fine when remilled next yr,,,,it moves faster than anything else,,,,

Have you planked it yet hodge? After paying to have it delivered and milled will you of made more than cutting for firewood?

nice lump of ash there mate! i'm starting to feel guilty every time i ring up stuff like this for firewood - perhaps milling might lead to a better use of resources in future!!

Some useful info information that may help.

Strip stack the timber to air dry before putting into a kiln. Then you can select only the best cuts for the kiln as any natural faults will appear while it is airing. This saves time and money drying the rubbish.

Strictly speaking 2' cuts want to season for about a year.

If you are slab sawing then the radial cuts from the mid section will be more reliable than the cuts from the upper and lower portions of the trunk.

When timber is being planed and straightened a machinist will take approx 1/4' from each face.

for the work involved and price at the moment better money in fire wood.

theres money in milling but theres a lot of waste in ash, oak isn't so bad but firewood is easy money, you may end up milling and seasoning a load of firewood..especially if you don't know what your at.

as for ash i've just paid over 1000 for a 6" thick 2foot wide slab 16 foot long. time for me to find some large butts and wind our mill up me thinks. if any one has some up for grabs, south shrops, north worcs. pm me.
