Hi,

Has anyone got experience of getting insurance on a road quad?Im thinking of buying an old Honda Foreman TRX 400 and having tat rather than a first car if its cheaper to insure. Has anyone done this? Any idea on price and company?

Cheers :001_smile:

my honda atv costs me more than my defender to insure per year

atvs are far less fuel efficient on the road

agri registered ATV have 25mph speed limit on roads

Hondas are not great on road due to the solid rear axle

There is a grey area regarding distance restrictions for agri atv use on roads

if you get it PLG registered it will need an mot so not worth getting a dog as it needs to be road worthy, but you probably wont be allowed to tow on the road with it under your insurance (especially timber! check your policy allows this as many dont even for agri use!)

buy your self a cheap banger it would be far more sensible than an atv for day to day use, and will be cheap insurance to start with, if your only doing a few miles round local woods it may be worth looking at getting a cheap 4x4 converted to limited milage so you can run it on red and cheap insurance but you will be limited to something like 5miles from the farm its registered at.

Contact your local NFU. Quad will need to be road registered as Light Agricultural. If you register it as Quadricycle it will require an MOT, and there arent many testing stations that will MoT a quad. If the quad hasnt already been road reg, you will need to take it to your local DVLA inspector to get its vehicle licence.

Quads are useful on the farm and in the woods but they're not worth having inplace of a car. Not just all the road legility issues but the fact someone might just knick it from Tesco car park.

Out of interest how old are you? If your young and wanting a first car then its going to be expensive even on a old banger. Unfortuantly its best to bite the bullet and just do it as you start to earn a NCB.

I believe pest control has lost it's Ag status, as I think gamekeeping has. It's deemed sport management. Im not 100% on this, but I was told something along these lines the other day. Will find out ASAP if I can.
