Landrover overdrive opinions?

I dont believet that overdrives are anything but a waste of money and a waste of a PTO output on a Defender. If you want an economical run around get a car FFS, if you want a capable 4x4 get a defender and dont worry about furel costs. You could fit a PTO winch to that output and actually still have a useful truck.

Just my opinion.

i know of two gkns taken off due to issues of oil and overpressuring gearboxes ! but know of a few that are diamonds ! disco gears also good ! not so for towing as brings up everything !

has the truck been remaped yet may be worth a though as Td5alive do remaps that make them much more drivable and actually incresses the fuel economey !

Nothing to do with them just heard good things about them !

I fitted a GKN unit to my old 200Tdi 90 and it was brilliant especially for towing as it could be used as a splitter in 3 and 4 and then lower the rev's in 5th once on the motorway. I found it made motorway work much more relaxing.

Got a Td5 110 and am gutted I had to sell my 200Tdi with the unit still attached. The Td5 is a good engine but definately needs long legs above 60mph.

GKN dont make the overdrives anymore but they do pop up time to time on flebay and I think Devon4x4 stock parts for them still.

When money allows I will be getting a Roverdrive unit (expensive mind £1500). Unlike the GKN unit it has no electrics involve which I like the sound of and I think it runs straight off the gearbox oil rather than its own supply.

I don't think you'll ever make your money back on the unit in diesel costs (although if it hits £2 per litre....!) but it will make motorway driving much nicer and give you more flexibility when towing.
