If it looked a bit battered that might have been our trailer!! It went in for a power pack a while ago but we haven't got round to picking it up yet which is in our favour as our yard it full at the moment!! To be fair Steve has always been really good with us but at the moment he's pretty much running the whole place on his own. I think he's had a run of bad luck with staffing problems. If you're definitely interested its worth persisting or try to arrange a meeting with Steve - i'm happy to answer any questions I can and I'd be happy to meet with you sometime to take a look at ours - what sort of work do you do?

Hello mate - yup, all from Riko. Bought around 6 years ago and it's been a great bit of kit We've recently had a power pack fitted so we can use the timber crane without plugging it into the Alpine tractor ?

Afternoon We've not done a great deal of felling work so far this season so I'm looking for cordwood I can process into firewood at home to replenish stocks!! We have a small forestry trailer/timber grab so I can collect by the trailer load (trailer is 3m long) Interested to hear if anyone has any road road timber available? I'm in Hampshire (near Hook) but we're near to Berkshire and Surrey county boundaries Many thanks - Tim

Hi all, Looked at a job recently, roughly half way between Winchester and Petersfield. It about as far as we would ever want to travel but we reckon there will be a fair amount of chip to come out. Rather than haul it all back home when we're full wondered if anyone could recommend a chip site in that area? Cheers all :-)

Thought it was about time I uploaded a couple of pic's of my Defender. Had the 110 Td5 for about 4 years now. Stage 3 remap which has made towing the Alpine much better!! I owned the series 3 when I was 18, had it for 3 weeks, caught fire and spent all summer rebuilding it - sold it 16 years ago and found it on ebay last summer so bought it back - time for another rebuild I guess.........!!

That was our concern as well. With the Alpine and rammer we're pretty much on the limit for our trailer. Main thing was getting the tractor/rammer to different sites behind the Defender. In hindsight we wish we've gone for the side sift but there were concerns about stability. Whats you views on the Kanga? Saw one at the Saltex show this year and was impressed - we're got a cattle coral to build soon so 25 1m deep holes to dig. Hand dug last year ...took bloody ages!! Not uploaded a photo before but if it works here's our set up....

Yeah, we've got a Protech P30 (inline) contractor on the back of the Alpine - makes getting strainers in the ground a tad quicker than digging - bloody solid too!! We did some chestnut post and rail in Winchester recently too and managed to ram the post/rails at the same time. It was a very wet site so digging/back filling would have been painful! You thinking of getting a rammer?

Hi Jim All good cheers - you guys keeping busy? Been a little slow this winter so the Alpine hasn't been out much! Roll on spring and another fencing job to get the post rammer going again....hopefully!! Might need to pick your brains again soon, toying with getting a flail for the Alpine?

No, we saw him working on the opposite side of the Punchbowl to us - he was doing 'real' tree work!!! Think he was on Countryfile on Sunday? I don't know him that well but have met him at the National Trust office's, really nice bloke :-) Don't know J Woolgar? Is he local? Another guy we use is Justin Owen, he is based in Haslemere - think I've seen him on Countryfile too...!!

Nice work that :-) We were scrub clearing at the Devils Punchbowl for 3 week before xmas so was watching the progress each day!! You guys doing the tree clearance there as well? Do you get your chestnut locally? we've been using CGW Chestnut, would recommend them

We use GK Benford near Odiahm - £30 a load (10x5 tipper) logs or chip, and can tip any time of day/night using the swipe card. Really nice bloke to deal with as well - not too far from Camberley, straight down the M3 HTH

Bloody hell, bet that pulled well!!!! Not surprised it chewed up a few gearboxes - about 120ish bhp to 340 bhp!!! Don't suppose you got any pics of it?

I love to see a tdv8 in a Defender I've seen the Bell auto services defender with tdv6. Think it was mated to the 6 speed Disco manual gearbox - not sure how the rest of the running gear will fair?!! Think the biggested headache they had with the ECU and getting it to accept it was in a different vehicle without all the Disco electrics:confused1:

Agree - If money was no object I'd take a V8 any day just to hear it purr!! Although I had to really wind up my 3.5 when towing compared with the 200 Tdi but I'm not convinced my 3.5 was in the best condition! A Tdv6 or Tdv8 in a defender would be interesting....

I had a 3.5 V8 90 - about 10 mpg when heavy towing, 15 mpg unladen on a decent run. Sold it for a 200 Tdi, 31mpg best return and about 22 - 25 mpg heavy towing. Now got a 110 Td5, got 32 mpg on a decent run recently unladen with an overdrive fitted. Got it stage 3 mapped last weekend specifically for towing/mpg, not done a test yet but reckon I'm up a bit on mpg. Normally get 400 miles from tank unladen and 320 - 350 when towing. First tank after being chipped got 380 mostly with the trailer on. I'd say my 200 Tdi was best for towing as standard compared the the Td5 which seems to lack low down grunt but once chipped I think the Td5 will pull really well............once the clutch has been replaced as it started to slip!! That said, it depends a lot on how heavy your right foot is, I drive like a coffin dodger - about 60 - 65 mph on the motorway and fairly carefully on the back roads!!!

Hello mate I've been after a tipi tent for ages but been put off by the price. We recently bought one of these: Bergans Lavvo S - 4/6 Person Tipi Tent, Tents and one of these: Portable Log & Wood Burner - Frontier Stove Only camped in it over xmas to give it a try and unfortunately didn't get a chance to use the stove but for the money we were both really impressed. Light enough to carry on the bike but big enough to stand up in - For kids as well I'd say go for the 6-8 person to give extra space around the wood burner. I need to play with sorting the chimney flue but from searching on line it should be pretty easy HTH

Can't fell a tree on the basis it might cause damage - it either is or isn't causing damage to the building. If we worked on the basis of what might happen we’d have bugga all trees left!! A 30% reduction wont do anything regarding subs and the roots will still be in place and potentially make the situation worse as the tree puts on new growth and it's demand on water increases as it tries to replace the foliage lost. That said, in that situation I wound rather the tree was felled and replaced with something else further away - how about if they offer to pay for its removal/replace?

From my subsidence days a while back and from working quite closely with a few structural engineers, their common opinion was that heave is pretty rare. On a few occasions (out of 1000's we dealt with) we were asked to stop trying to get a tree removed as the risk of heave was too great after doing heave calculation (not sure how they did this!!) The general rule of thumb is that a tree needs to significantly pre-date any structure for heave to be an issue - trouble is, if there is a risk of heave (for the soil to revert back to its original state) it's going to happen regardless, as one day any tree will eventually die! I’m no expert but the best I can suggest is to get soil analysis carried out, heave calc done and run it all by the home owners insurance company as each insurance company seems to have different policys on the issue HTH
