I feel I should wait for Rupe, since this is his favorite subject. Nevermind, just one question, what do you mean by sub contracting?

Working as part of one of their teams, or taking on whole jobs with your own kit, in your own time, and without direct supervision from the main contractor?

Then legally you are exactly the same as any other employee, and are covered by the employer's insurances. (PL & EL)

If having your own insurance helps get you work, then that is of course a different matter.

You mean personal accident insurance?

Depends on the terms of the policy I suppose, you would have to ask. If personal accident insurance is important to you then it would be wise to get your own though.

You would be covered legally by their EL insurance.

I think that a tricky area. If you tripped over your bootlaces while on site would that be covered? Personal accident cover is probably worth having to cover yourself from everything in life not just work.

But the main thing here is the public liablity, and peter has summed up what I would have said perfectly. Your not really a subby your employed as a self employed person and therefore covered the same way as employees.

But what goes on while working abroad is whole different matter too!!
