steering problem on 4x4

my money is on a bent arm/rod caused by sliding down an iced road into a kerb, then to keep the wheels straight it's been adjusted all on one side as gollum says, the tracking is easily set with a spanner and molegrips but check for bent bits.

but i dont think so, it does drive straight, just the steering wheel stops turning a bit too soon

my thought was that the steering mechanism has been replaced at some point and done incorrectly

The Most likely cause, (assuming all your rods ARE straight) is that it has had a new sttering box, and that it hasnt been fitted correctly. The drop arm will need to come off, and centralise the box (equal amount of turns each way without steerin arms attached and wheels central) and then reattach the drop arm when its correct. Piecs of pee.

havent had the steering wheel off in the past have you?? could of been put on a few splines out then had the tracking adjusted whilst its out and caused more of a problem?

i havent!

steering wheel and wheel alignment are straight. wheels just dont turn enough one way and dont touch the stops, so think it is more than just that
