Box wood?

Hi all

 

Have discovered what I think is a bit of Box wood in my woodheap. Sort of square pattern on the bark and very heavy (denser than water). Does this sound like Box? Looks to be about thirty to forty years old.

 

Anyway, is it worth anything and where's best to get rid of it? Biggest is about eight inches diameter and I have about twelve feet of varying diameters.

doesnt sound like box, box has knobbily bark (that is likely long gone after 30 years)...

Speak to some wood turners about it. Apparently they like the stuff..

 

And shame on you if it is box. Box wood of 8inch diameter would be bloody ancient. Shame to loose such a specimen, if it is indeed box.

Haven't a clue what job it came from, and frankly couldn't give a flying f*ck.

I didnt think holm oak was denser than water but I may be wrong. Box on the other hand is..

Lol, as I haven't a clue if it's box or not, I wouldn't have had a clue when I cut it down! If it was me that cut it down even- I can't remember what job it might have come from.

 

Just looked up Holm Oak bark and Box wood bark on google images- although it 'might' be box, Holm Oak looks much more likely as the bark pattern is much 'squarer'

 

So come on you tree buffs- is Holm Oak denser than water?

Holm is bloody heavy so could well be denser than water. Box is very sought after by etchers. It used to be used for pictures in the old style printing presses. It's very stable and has very tight grain so was good for 100's if not 1000's of prints. Folk who do etching would bite your arm off for it.

The last lot I had someone came down from Newcastle to get it. Get onto an etchers forum and find out more detail

Box, I believe is Britains hardest wood. The carpenter who built Scotts arctic huts told me that; he turned a boxwood handle for my school project - ever so 'ard he used to say!
