I bought one second hand 3 years ago for £90 been excellent would highly reccomend it. I have the 3400kg version and it seriously pulls(have pulled large leaning trees at 45 degree angles over the other way). Plus parts are easily available.

Buy one they will not disappoint.

This caught my eye; is it a nasty copy or half decent?

ACE Wire rope winch hoist tirfor 1600 lift 2500 kg pull on eBay (end time 10-Mar-11 16:46:05 GMT)

Just that one job where you don't want to spend £loads!

Gonna ring the army surplus but might have one of they ones from you Jonsie - use it and sell it after! :blushing:

got that exact same one ,gr8 little winch can`t fault it well worth the £££,mines paid for itself 10 times over, been using it today felling some sycamore stems on a awkward bank .

I have used Yaletrac 1600kgs winches for years on remote callout work and they have never let me down except the odd shear pin which are kept in the handle. 3200kg winches are to big and heavy IMO just use a snatch block.

Bought an ACE to replace a (stolen) lovely old 800kg lift Tirfor. It does the job really well, bit cheesy on the build quality but can't complain. Make sure you get a good load of spare shear pins (20??) - you can never be sure if the factory will move on and you don't want to bin a decent winch a couple of years down the line for a lack of pins.

i've got the 800kg tirfor and the big 5t tirfor, also had/ tried lugall etc, each have their good and bad points but if i was starting from scratch i would get another 800kg tirfor. ok so they're a bit heavier etc but the amount of times they get used (and abused) and the amount of work you can do with them make them well worth it
