Not quite the highlands but I had folks that lived at a place called Garybank in Blair Atholl. Stunning scenery and plenty of walks to do. Would suggest heading up to Rannoch moor/station as there are some old growth Pine and Birch forests there (or at least there were) and it is blissfully quiet. Garrybank is now a holiday let and they advertise on the net. Blair castle is quite cool too and there's plenty of whiskey distilleries about. Alternatively I'd head to the west coast. We stayed on Loch Awe and went to places like Glen Etive and Glen Orchey. The whole area is just awesome but if you want total isolation I'd go for one of the islands. It just depends what you want to do. I'd stay well clear of Aviemore though; personally couldn't stand the place. Apologies to anyone that's from there.

Me and the wife love gardenstown near macduff banff it's not quite as far as the highlands but isn't too far, we stop in a little fishermans cottage named suil na Mara (eye of the sea). Has an open fire and the sea is literally outside the window will put a couple of pics up when I'm at home mate on my phone at the minute. The attic is done out in timber and has a big window which opens for sea views and dolphins can be spotted I love it.

sorry to derail the thread (not a complete derail, only a minor one) Me and the missus and the kids would also like to go to scotland this summer but camping.

Does anyone know of any good campsites round and between the dumfries to newton stewart area?

Cheers

Hi, go further north. Dumfriesshire is very very wet...further north is just wet!
