beech bark peeling

hi,i went to look at a beech today,its had quite a heavy reduction in the past and now the bark has fallen off the base 2/3 of way round trunk to height of 6ft.rest of bark seems ok.thought it might have been fire damage,but owners say theyve never had one near it.any ideas of cause?cheers

Pics needed, and location. Could there be animals rubbing it off, or has it literally peeled/ fallen off? (I take it they arent trying to kill the tree?.....attempted ringbarking)

yeah,its on a newish housing estate,next to a garage,im assuming the nature loving developers have chomped straight through!im trying to find a way to preserve the tree but am thinking its terminal!

its just falling off in big plates,next to garage,house andbusy road.

Sounds like the old girl is beyond saving if the damage is over half way round the tree, Shame if Im right. lets hope somebody on here has another idea

Might be worth turning it into a monolith. Even if it regenerates from the cut point its height will be greatly reduced and will pose less of the threat to the garage.

would love to do that but i dont think its the kind of place that would 'get' a monolith,will try and convince them though.

The fire may have been a few years ago, possibly the builders.

 

It can take years for fire damage to become apparent.
