what is the best tree identification book to buy

The Collins Tree Guide is pretty good, I've the hardback version and its user friendly and small enough for field use.There are more detailed ones available that are usually A4 size and ok for the home.

Another vote for the Collins Tree Guide, a useful book for a noob like me.

I've got teh collins, both the hard and paper backed versons. go for the hard backed, its a few quid more but it has more species in it.

Quite obvious point here, but you've got your answer above.

 

But also try looking at getting a specific book for Coniferous id.

A good idea is to go round second hand book shops,charity shops and you will buy some good id tree books. last week i went in a charity shop and bought the arboriculturists handbook for £1 a bargain.

'Tree Diseases and Disorders' by H Butin is a good one for pest/disease identification - ideal if you're training. I've got the Collins Tree Guide too plus there's a Dorling Kindersly Guide at work which is good for quick reference.
