First you need to mill up your tree into a D shape & then cut in to 18" (if you are doing 18" shingles) blocks. The width of the D can vary as you will need a selection of widths to shingle a roof.

 

 

 

Then fit them to your shingle adapter on your mill.

(dog is optional)

 

 

Then run the mill through them remembering to flip the lever after each run to alter the angle of the block.

 

 

Repeat till you get to the bottom of the pile

Its f ing freezing, well it was last week. The wood inside was frozen to the floor. But then it still has no heating or roof insulation in yet or even wall covering & celling in one room. Once its all done it will be warm & not need much heating.

Yeh saved a lot but has still been a costly job. Bought the timber in the round & milled it all up & planned all the interior wood too.

 

Yes its a Forester Jacko mill one of the first I think. I am very lucky cos it lives just down the road from me & I do some work with the bloke. He had the shingle maker made locally. I think he said it cost about £500 ish. It takes 5 block's at a time up to about 12" wide so you can do the 6-12" range that you need. Reasonably fast with two people on the job but a pain with one as you have to keep flipping the lever & adjusting the loose / cut shingles as the blade does move them till you get a pile going.
