Yale XTC splice dissection

Decided to see how Yale do their splices so dissected an old rope eye splice.

The actual outer sheath bury is only approx 6" long. I would have expected a lot deeper bury

I cut farther back to find the crossover and there wasn't one as you would expect. The inner core is plaited very neatly as shown in the pics.

Three core sections are twisted together which must then incorporate the the main inner core farther up.

Interesting to see what you entrust your life to.

The outer sheath fell off as I was dissecting, so the outer core you can see is the eye and the bury

You can tell I was bored today eh ?

it is a wonder how little you do actually trust your life on, but have they actually failed?

as you tension it the rope squashes together and its a like a finger trap, the harder you pull, the harder it squashes together.

Have you ever spliced 16 strand dean? the final bury is a bit of a nightmare, as its a lot to go down a little hole!

As Yale or any manufactorer will tell you, their in house splices are finished using brute force, whereas a hand splice relies on finess and skill.

I'd love to see how they plait the inner core and bury it whilst keeping the rope diametre the same with no lumps.

I think we should get a group of geeks together, buy a load of crates of beer and organise an arbtalk Yale factory visit.

Even if we dont learn anything, we can get rat arsed :001_smile:

And maybe get a new rope in the process!

Plaiting the inner core would save space wouldn't it?
