For those of you that are interested i have started gathering all the required bits today, if there is any sort of interest i will take some pics as i go and do a thread, i am no expert, and i will be doing it all on a budget of pretty much nothing, so lots of recycling going on (lumps of scrap brought back to life basicly) but it is the sort of thing i enjoy making in my spare time.

Rob.

Thanks, The ebay item has some similiar ideas to what mine is going to be, although the four ram idea ??

I think the 4 ram idea mightn't be as daft as it looks; if all 4 are pushing equally then it should reduce a lot of the stress on the plate and runners and ensure it pushes square rather than just pushing in the middle if that makes sense.

Most of the failures i've seen on conventional splitters have been from a twisting force (whether twisted grain or not square ends) thats' been exagerated by the pushing from the ram - at the end of the day something's got to give.

A few pics, hope it has worked !!

fist is the steel i found, it is 1.9mtr long, 100mm wide and 200mm deep, i did not think this was strong enough and would twist so have beefed it up using some quarter inch angle.

The Ram is an old one i found in the shed, it used to on a set of ring rolls, easily lifted 5 ton in its previous use so with the right pump and power unit should have plenty of power.

For those interested it has a stoke of 850mm, ram external bore of 50mm, and cylinder bore of 110mm.

Bugger, no pics, where did they go, must have been lost in transit !!
