Just a query regarding haulage. Looking a bit closer at possibilities for selling firewood as a commercial venture I was wondering about haulage and cost if I were to buy in from somewhere else (I don't generate much useful wood) and to get dropped at a yard of my choosing. I've seen one company that will do a 6 or 8 wheel tipper for 32 pounds an hour only catch is a minimum 10 hour hire with driver. Could in theory carry 20 tonnes max. Tipper was what I was thinking but any other suggestions. I'm seriously thinking of giving it a go if my yard space comes off

Just a thought, can your timber supplier not offer a price with transport included?

If he has transport, it is very likely to be cheaper than using hired in haulage.

The last haulage price I heard was £13 a ton for an arctic load (20 ton roughly) from Windermere to Lockerbie power station. Hope it helps.

They're talking about haulage here.

Some figures mentioned are £10/ton, and £1.50/mile (including the return trip)...but this refers to bulk haulage of ag. produce.

Let us know what you find out. I'd be interested to know how much it would be for a 150 mile round trip per 20 ton load firewood (2m x 6-12" dia)

I pay about £10 a tonne for haulage (£250 for a full artic load) Negotiate a set price for the load before hand. The prices will keep going up with the price of fuel.
