Hi guys,

Just thought I'd drop a line and say hello to all on the site. I'm quite new to all this wood lark, but it's sort of got a grip of me. I bought a wood burner in September and have been obsessed by wood ever since, my wife just shakes her head. Do I need hospital treatment or does everyone go through this stage lol?

Anyway, I've been getting wood from various sources for this winter, paying about £45 per cubic metre for hardwood. But for next year I've sort of put a plan together, once a week I go across to the local nature reserve and help the Ranger out, he in return lets me take all the wood I need.

Last week I heard chainsaws next door, lo and behold they were cutting a huge beech tree down, guess what, yes I got the lot for nothing, just need to split it.

Which leads me on to that I've bought a Stihl 180 and a 6ton wood splitter, I think they shoud be ok for a beginner. Any thoughts?

I even knocked together a wood shed from a load of pallets, actually looks ok, although it's full now. Rambling on now so I'll sign out.

I'm pleased for you mate. I hope your enthusiasm continues. Mine's wearing thin after 16 years of splitting logs:laugh1:

Thanks for the feedback guys. I got the 180 to ease myself into it really, think I've decided on the side of caution really. To be honest I haven't used it yet, it got delivered about two weeks ago, but I work abroad and I'm not home till 8th January.

Do you think my 6T splitter is powerful enough for beech?

Also got to mention that I'm quite impressed by my Clearview stove, dearer than most other makes but probably better than most, mind you the liner and fitting cost more than the stove.

Has anybody had any wood from Clearview? I went to Dinham House in Ludlow about a month ago, they've got stacks of ash outside, but it seems a tad expensive.
