Skidding cone?

Been using a skidding cone for three years now. Great for skidding trunks out, stops the buts digging in. Gets towed behind our Riko or used with the portable winch. Bought it with the portable winch. Think it came from Corwen Forestry or pro climber. I'm using it on Monday to extract a load of poles down a very steep bank. I got a video somewhere of us using it. The canoe idea we've also used, got two old ones from our local leisure centre , cut them open, filled with logs and winched out.

The one I've used came from Proclimber. Great bit of kit, if somewhat over priced for what it is...

I gave up looking and used the ends of an old goosed canoe. Handy for short wood bundles, wide base so less ploughing and a whole canoe gives 2 "cones" for circa £50. Try an outdoor activity spot or fleabay, my last one came for nowt, but they had cut holes in it for bit to repair other boats.

I love our skidding cone. Definitely worth the investment in time saved. Go for it is my advice.

We have a steep hill & need to extract down it. Been very useful to have a cone.

You can just get it over the end of a 50cm diameter log. We sell them in the shop along with the Portable Winches.

 

Not sure what materiel they use, Portable Winch call it a "high-performance polymer plastic", the things are bomb proof and withstand whatever abuse you put them through.

Further to winching timber out of our sloping wood, a little reading around, and the opinion seems to be in favour of the use of skidding cones. This seems particularly so in USA/Canada, but I found a couple of positive pieces from the FC.

 

However, a quick trawl of the usual uk purveyors of forestry shiny things did not turn one up.

 

Anyone any opinions on the value of using cones, and any vendors in the UK that you are aware of?

you could purchase one -0 such as the logrite one....

OOOORRRRRRRRR

you could save tyourself a ton and find a plastic barrel (usually blue with a black lid thats strapped on which has a curve to the sides)

then cut said barrel leaving the bottom plus a U shape (or kinda diagonal if it were on its end) cut a hole for the chain/cable and Voila.
