So if they are worried about there being enough gas for an engine to run on, (classed as a significant leak) surely that amount of gas could be inginted by a spark from the chain?:confused1:

Without getting to far into the detail of what was a pretty extensive method statement, one facet of the hydrasaw is that it takes the chain lube from the drive oil. This means you can set the lube anywhere from miserly dribble to biblical flood.

Aint no way the bar and chain were going to spark although we did joke about a copper toothed chain.

A MASSIVE amount of oil will not stop a chain sparking if the saw gets stuck trapped.

My point was purely about how we, as contractors are made to jump through hoops to meet specific restrictions, often made up by safety officers that have no real understanding of how chainsaws, and our industry for that matter, actually work.

Laughable IMO.

Well yes I agree we have all met our share of jobsworth safety officers bent on enforcing what they see as the right way of doing things. I recon the one that listens is about 1 in 10

But in this case I wrote the MS and submitted it. It was sufficiently detailed that the gas people approved it without modification.

Over oiling that hydrasaw does make a difference, the first time it went on max flow it looked like I had pissed my pants before I noticed I was getting wet, moreover the hydrasaw relies on torque rather than chain speed, it runs about half the chainspeed of a petrol saw but has sooo much more grunt so less speed means less sparks.

Thanks TinTin, I did have a look at these guys but looks like the saws are for sale rather than hire...still struggling finding places that hire these out. Will keep trying but if any more suggestions...that woudl be great :-)

Just wondering if setting up a blower/fan would satisfy the gas men- blow all the gas away-

These guys -given the job of making everything safe and just go at it 110% to make themselves appear indespensible.
