Out of interest why do you prefer it?

The river birch is a stunning tree, and so different to the other varieties, its a rounded form usualy, like the jaquemontii, but its bark is a stark contrast and forces the observer to stand and stare as it is not the usual expected birch.

as for the ermanii, well it is tall and slender, a form that is typicaly birch, whiter than white, and if selected as three stemmed and then group planted with Nigras in a wide vista make a truly stunning and contrasting planting that elevates a plot. They are "different" and arguably the best of thier kind.

there is a large park near me with a B. albosinensis. Lovely tree i shall try go get a picture:thumbup:

This is the one with tri colourations, salmon pinks within the bark (mean more so than other cultivars) i think, a truly stunning birch but still second fiddle for me:001_smile:

Yes the bark is majorily pinkyish, like you say with variations. i do like the form of of the B .albo var septentrionalis (i think thats the right saying) were the bark looks like its in the process of being peeled off. The birch as a species in my eyes are a truly remarkable tree and sometimes overlooked at the other more grandiose species like oak, beech etc etc
